Taxpayers can also listen to information with little or no waiting by calling IRS Teletext 1-800-829-4477 to hear pre-recorded messages in English or Spanish covering various tax topics or to check on the status of a refund.

The state of New Jersey has not made printed copies of tax forms available for distribution for over 4 years. You have to call Trenton to get them to mail you a copy; or photocopy forms at the Library. You can download forms and instructions at:

FREE FILING ON THE INTERNET
Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to prepare and e-file your federal and state tax return without paying a dime. Be sure you read the fine print and disclaimers before you start plugging numbers into an online program. Otherwise, you could discover that you don’t qualify.
|H&R Block More Zero||
Who can use it: Taxpayers who file 1040EZ or 1040A, and itemizers who claim the most common deductions on form 1040. Includes state return.
Most taxpayers, including those with self-employment and/or investment income can use this program. State tax return included. Taxpayers with income from investments or self-employment can use this program. There are a few limitations—the program won’t handle income from estates, for example—but 90% of taxpayers may be eligible to use the product.
|DIY Tax||This program, offered by tax preparation company Liberty Tax, is available to all taxpayers, even those with complex forms; state return included.
|IRS Free File||
Free File isn’t limited to taxpayers with simple returns, but your income is limited to $64,000. If you itemize, or have income from investments or self-employment, you can prepare and e-file your federal tax return through the IRS’ own web site.
|Turbotax ALL Free||If you file 1040EZ or 1040 A, made less than $100,000, don't own a home or rental property, didn't sell investments, don't own a business or have 1099 income and don't have major medical expenses, you can use this program.
|MYFREETAXES (sponsored by UnitedWay)||If you make less than $64,000, you may be eligible. There is a video on how to use the site, and a live chat is available for help.
FREE HELP FOR SENIORS
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
